Energy action plan

The University of Copenhagen's first energy action plan was adopted by the University's management in March 2008. The University is developing the plan in waves, to be launched in parallel as an integral strategy.

The energy action plan's first wave

The first wave focuses on immediately identifiable, specific projects. The eight faculties can apply for financing for energy projects approximately four times a year. The proposals are assessed, prioritised and financed by a centralised energy pool for the whole of the University of Copenhagen. Energy agreements are entered into for each project and savings on operations transferred to the faculties' cores services (research and teaching).

During 2008, more than 1.5 million Euro were allocated to approx. 50 energy-saving projects at the University. The projects are expected to result in annual savings on operations of a total of DKK 4.6 million (Euro 600.000) and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 1700 tons. These savings in energy purchases will be transferred to core services including research and education.

The second wave

The second wave focuses on thematic initiatives in a number of building complexes with the same type of challenge on the energy front. Optimisation of ventilation systems, cooling systems, electricity installations and electricity-consuming appliances in general may be selected as subjects for specific investments in energy savings.

The third wave

The aim of the initiative is to develop ESCO agreements together with the Danish University and Property Agency for as many parts of the University as possible, i.e. agreements in which a private party (Energy Service COmpany) guarantees energy savings.

Other initiatives

In addition to the above, the energy action plan includes continued development of energy management at the University's eight faculties and the introduction of energy-conscious design and planning of construction and maintenance projects.
