Student seminar on sustainability
The 28-30 March 2008 Green Network - a student organisation at Copenhagen University - hosts a national student seminar with the purpose of uniting all of Denmarks universities to create a unified objective on a sustainable society.
According to Green Networks spokesperson Casper Mølck, sustainable universities should be the motive power behind the sustainable society.
"A sustainable development of our society is, if possible, more important today than before, as a growing number of the world's population moves towards increased wealth on the basis of outdated technology and obsolate knowledge which in turn has caused many of the problems that we face today.
Scientists, professors, politicians and citizens are aware of this fact - yet still there is little action. A sustainable future requires development under the caretaking of nature, society and the economy if we want to enable the future generations an opportunity of equal livingstandards.
The university has a special function and role in society. Research, sharing experiences and creating new knowledge are some of its main functions. At the universities, many visions are set alive and some are later integrated as fundamental parts of society's ongoing transformations. Thus the universities should take the lead in the effort to promoting a sustainable future.
The ambition of the national seminar is to create a forward-looking manifest that holds a number of specific and realistic goals that can be implemented directly at the universities - and by doing so - unifying all the Danish universities in a ambitious effort to create The Sustainable University"
